Lessons in Corporate Finance is one of those rare books that can be understood by a general audience yet still appeal to a professional in the field. It allows the reader to understand corporate finance at a basic level, and then through case studies, walks the reader through more and more complex concepts and calculations, while continuously reinforcing the information from previous chapters. It is this iterative process that makes the book so useful and surprisingly easy to follow.Whether you want to Occupy Wall Street or work on Wall Street, this is an essential book. If you have an interest in government or public policy, Lessons in Corporate Finance will provide the knowledge you need to understand business strategy enabled through our current accounting laws and financial tools. I am a much more informed reader of the news and am more knowledgeable about different economic proposals.What kept me reading this book and working through the formulas (and if you don't want to work through all of the formulas in this book, you do not need to as their use and importance is clearly laid out. The book does show you how the math is worked through, which is a useful exercise if you want to get a deeper knowledge) is the humor sprinkled throughout the book - either as asides or embedded in the text . Professor Asquith has a great sense of humor and I thoroughly enjoyed his lampooning of government agencies, corporations, b-school students, and his co-author. This book cares that the reader understands finance, and it is written to maximize the learning and enjoyment of the reader. It's this care for the reader's experience that makes this a must buy.

Wow. This book is not a bunch of ratios and formulas with some superficial advise on how it may be used. This book actually gives real applications of financial decisions.I think I finally understand what CFOs/finance executives do (or should do...I'm looking at you Massey Ferguson management).

"Lessons in Corporate Finance" is a unique book in many regards. It marries corporate finance and accounting, two essential knowledge banks for anyone studying or working in the corporate world. The authors span four decades and provide perspective on the myriad changes that have taken place in corporate transactions, focusing on companies across a broad swath of industries, both "old" and "new". In particular, I highlight the analysis of Apple and the analysis of the issue of whether the company should pay dividends. In a transparent fashion, Messrs. Asquith and Weiss do an exhaustive analysis of Apple's history, its corporate and financial situation in 2012, and the implications of various possible decisions. This brings me to the most striking aspect of the book: the manner in which it is written, almost like a conversation between the professors and their students, making it highly accessible for readers. Whether you use this book as a reference, to learn about the subject matter, or as classroom material, the end note should not be skipped: Rules to Live By. Having worked in financial services for over two decades, I highly recommend this book for practitioners and students alike.

"Lessons.." array of case histories are very relatable - even for non-finance types. ( I skipped the numbers! Amazingly, I learned a lot.) The "talky" feel, Q and A style, makes a complex landscape understandable - principles of cash flow, debt, market place realities, risk; when/how they're bad, good, or even real. What I found most interesting was seeing how each company's choices, in a given financial environment, led to success or failure. Bottom line: the way leadership evaluates risk - the roads taken or not - is everything. If you want to get the basics of corporate finance, this is a great book.

HIGHLY recommend this book if you want to learn about corporate finance and what a CFO does. I don't have any finance background but everything in this book is very accessible and so interesting that you just can't stop reading (if you are willing to look up several terms when you don't understand)! The book is conversational and you feel like talking to the authors in person. The book is so good that after reading it I also looked for other books by the same authors but couldn't find any. Guess they put all best stuff into this book, so yeah get the book and learn from the smart people!

Great book...I had the pleasure of attending a case study taught by Asquith while in business school and he is an excellent professor. The material is fun to read in a conversation-like manner, yet still includes all the academic and theoretical underpinnings of both historical and modern corporate finance. I have read numerous finance textbooks and this was the single best source for a complete understanding of three primary topics: managing cash flow, evaluating investments, and understanding alternative financing methods. Highly recommended for both seasoned finance practitioners (because of the nuances taught in the book) and those with little corporate finance knowledge to receive a macro to micro view of the subject.

This book is fantastic. With no prior knowledge of corporate finance, but an eagerness to learn more about what I read every day in the WSJ, I picked up this book. Each chapter does a fantastic job at reviewing topics in "case format" or story-like narrative to provide a compelling picture of the topics discussed. This book took what I saw as a daunting subject and made it approachable, funny and interesting. It's a well-written guidebook to the financial world of corporations! Highly recommend.

Lessons in Corporate Finance is a novel and refreshing alternative to traditional textbooks. It takes you to the same destination but traveling there is a lot more fun. Serious students of corporate finance – whether they are MBAs or executives will find that this book makes corporate finance come alive! A great read.

About the Author
John Carl's interest in sociology grew from his interests and job experiences after college, which included working in hospitals, schools, churches and prisons. John reflects, “In these many diverse encounters I continued to notice how often the structures of society often did not support the change so desperately sought after by the individual.  I began to reflect on my sociology courses from my undergraduate work and decided to return to graduate school to study sociology.”

 

Returning to graduate school at the University of Oklahoma, he became passionate about the study of Criminology and Stratification completing his Ph.D. while teaching full time at Rose State College.  John says, “I found that every part of my life to this point, fit perfectly with the study of sociology.  It is a diverse and exciting field that helps a person understand their world.”

 

Today, teaching remains his primary focus. John Carl has excelled in the classroom, winning awards for his teaching and working to build and improve the sociology program at Rose State.  “I teach the introductory class every semester because I believe it is the most important course in any department.  It is where students get the foundation they need for their continued study of sociology.  In these classes, my goal is simple.  To teach students to think sociologically so that they can consider any new event in the light of that thought.” 

 

When asked why he wrote Think Sociology, the answer was simple: “This book is truly a labor of love for me.  I wanted to write a book that is filled with examples used in the classroom and written in a language that students can understand without compromising the core concepts of sociology."

 

John lives in Oklahoma with his family, wife Keven, and daughters Sara and Caroline.  In his free time, John plays golf, gardens, throws pottery, and plays his guitar.  He continues to move from the classroom to community by being active in non-profit leadership in his home community and providing training to non-profit boards so they may better achieve their goals.  John suggests, “It is all part of sociology, not only to understand the world in which we live, but to take that understanding from the classroom and use it to improve the community.”

Yet this historic journey across the Southwest during the War with Mexico was but one of the reasons the Mormon Battalion holds a unique place in the story of America's western migration during the nineteenth century.

Army of Israel puts to rest ancient myths and sheds new light on forgotten heroes, both male and female. Recruited from a single religious organization, this battalion was perhaps the most unusual body of men ever to serve in America's armed forces. Between 1846 and 1848 its members played pivotal roles in events of such magnitude that they continue to shape the nation's destiny and the lives of its people.

This documentary study seeks to place the larger political and military role of the Mormon Battalion in the context of the history of the American West through the papers and accounts of the participants, supplemented with thorough explanatory text, notes, and references. A fine addition to the Kingdom in the West Series.

The March: Without opposition or firing a shot, the Mormon infantry tramped across the width of what was then northern Mexico and built a road as they went-Cooke's Wagon Road. Their explorations helped influence the decision in 1853 to acquire the Gadsden Purchase in southern Arizona.

Service in California: The good behavior and industry of battalion members accomplished far more than the muskets they shouldered in pacifying California. They defended ranches against raids by hostile natives, they sank wells, manufactured bricks, and built new buildings at Los Angeles and San Diego. The command arrived too late to take part in the last battles of the American occupation, but just in time to carry out President Polk's orders to treat the people of the region as fellow citizens, not as subjugated enemies, reversing the damage done by Robert Stockton and his underlings.

Explorations and Adventure: Besides exploring and building Cooke's Wagon Road across the Southwest, men chosen from the battalion escorted General Kearny and party, including Fremont, to Fort Leavenworth in 1847. Near Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada, they buried the bodies of Donner party members who had perished in the snow over the previous winter. Battalion veterans opened a new wagon road over the Sierra Nevada, known today as the Mormon-Carson Emigrant Trail, which became in 1849 the main thoroughfare of the gold rush to the new El Dorado. They pioneered Hensley's Salt Lake Cutoff, one of the California Trail's major branches and blazed the wagon road from Los Angeles to Salt Lake.

The Gold Rush: Battalion veterans in California witnessed an event that would transform the nation almost overnight and touch off a massive population shift west that still continues. As employees of James Marshall and John Sutter, two of these men-and two only-would record the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the day it happened, 24 January 1848. Other veterans soon scored the first major gold strike when they discovered the rich placer diggings at Mormon Island.

New Voices from the Borderlands: Army of Israel contains dozens of previously unpublished eyewitness accounts of the American conquest of the Southwest, including narratives by the fortotten Mormons who spent the winter of 1846 in today's Colorado. The accounts include a moving set of women's letters and colorful descriptions of encounters with Apache moonshiners, freebooting Mountaineers, ruthless Comancheros, Wakara's horse raiders, and heroic Mexican patriots.

Will Bagley is an independent historian who has written about overland emigration, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and the Mormons. Bagley has published extensively over the years and is the author and editor of many books, articles, and reviews in professional journals. Bagley is the series editor of Arthur H. Clark Company's documentary history series, KINGDOM IN THE WEST: The Mormons and the American Frontier. Bagley has been a Wallace Stegner Centennial Fellow at the University of Utah and the Archibald Hannah, Jr. Fellow in American History at Yale University's Beinecke Library. Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows has won numerous awards including a Spur Award from Western Writers of America, the Bancroft History Prize from the Denver Public Library, Westerners International Best Book, and the Western History Association Caughey Book Prize for the most distinguished book on the history of the American West. So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812-1848 is the first of four volumes of Overland West: The Story of the Oregon and California Trails Series.

Independent historian David L. Bigler is a Utah native, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and a University of Utah graduate in journalism. He received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Southern Utah State College at Cedar City, now Southern Utah University. He retired as director of public affairs for U.S. Steel in 1986 to devote full time to Mormon and western history. He is a fellow and an honorary life member, Utah State Historical Society; a former director, Utah State Board of History and Friends of University of Utah Libraries; and past president, Oregon-California Trails Association. His books and articles have won awards from the Utah State Historical Society, Westerners International and The Mormon History Association. His books include The Gold Discovery Journal of Azariah Smith, University of Utah Press, 1990; Forgotten Kingdom: The Mormon Theocracy in the American West, 1847-1896, Arthur H.
